Three more new signings have been announced by St Albans City FC for the 2026-27 campaign, writes Jess Unwin.
Zambian international Frankie Musonda is the third new close-season signing after Remi Sutton and Jake Gray.
Musonda, 28, began his senior football journey at Luton Town, making 15 appearances for the Hatters, before playing on loan with Braintree, Oxford City, Hemel Hempstead and Saints in 2019 and 2020.
His next move was north of the border to join Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers, which was followed by nearly 100 games for Ayr United, also in Scotland’s second tier. Last season, he packed his travel bags again and enjoyed a successful campaign with Bahrain SC.
A commanding defender, with the ability to step into midfield and pass out confidently from the back, Musonda has now put pen to paper on an 18-month contract with City.
On his previous time with the club and rejoining the Saints, Musonda said: “I’m very thankful to St Albans for giving me that opportunity to join at the start of my career. The move gave me the foundations to really kick on and understand how to play men’s football. I enjoyed my time here thoroughly.
“I’ve always kept and eye on the team and there are people like Zane [Banton] that are still here now who I know well. For the club to give me another chance now is something I’m very thankful for.”
Bedford-born Musonda qualifies to play for Zambia through his father and he was first called up to represent the Zambia national team in March 2022. He went on to play in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
St Albans City assistant manager Danny Green told the club’s podcast, Saints and the City: “For us it’s important to have a player of Frankie’s experience – he’ll be a leader on the pitch but also in the changing room. We’re delighted to have him.”
Self-described “all-action” midfielder Charlie Edwards is the fourth new face in the St Albans City squad.
After playing for various teams across Hertfordshire, Essex and London, he had a successful spell with Canvey Island, making 64 appearances, scoring eight goals and playing a key role in helping the club reach a play-off semi-final.
In 2024, he moved to Cray Wanderers, contributing three goals in 31 appearances, and in the 2025-26 season he featured for Brentwood Town in a Blues team that were the early pace-makers in the Isthmian League Premier Division before just failing to win promotion by losing the end-of-season play-off final to Billericay.
When outlining his game, Edwards, 34, called himself an “all-action midfielder who leaves it all out there and aims to lead by example”.
St Albans City assistant manager Danny Green told club podcast, Saints and the City: “Charlie’s a tenacious, box-to-box midfielder, who doesn’t stop running. He is a fantastic person off the pitch but on the pitch he has that spikiness about him, he can get under people’s skin, and that spikiness is something we felt we needed to improve on from the season just gone. He’s a good fit for the club.”
Striker Kai Brown admits he’s had a “crazy journey” so far in football but believes St Albans is the club where he can continue his recent rich vein of goal-scoring form.
The 25-year-old arrives at Clarence Park having notched 28 goals last season for Waltham Abbey in the Isthmian League North Division, the tier below the Premier Division where Saints currently reside. Brown’s goals helped to take the Abbots to the play-off semi-final, but they lost 2-1 to Stanway Rovers.
Talking to the club’s podcast, Saints and the City, he said: “I was really enjoying my football last year and playing with confidence, and that’s exactly what I want to do at St Albans!”
Brown arrived at Waltham Abbey after playing in Ipswich Town’s under-18 and under-23 teams and then spending time at 11 different clubs. He said: “It’s been a crazy journey, lots of ups and downs, but I’m at an age now where I know my game, and I’m just looking forward to scoring lots of goals.”
Danny Green, City’s assistant manager, described Brown as an “exciting signing” and “a player of real potential with pace and energy and who obviously knows where the back of the net is”.
