Old Albanians Junior Saints U18s have been crowned English National Champions after beating Dings Crusaders from Bristol at Sixways Stadium.
The girls were involved in a nail-biting 17-17 draw at full time but by virtue of scoring the first try in the final walked away with the silverware at yesterday’s clash.
It was a fitting end to the season which has seen them win the Herts Festival, the Herts League and last week they were presented with the Old Albanians RFC team of the year, the first time this accolade has been awarded to a junior girls’ side.
It is the culmination of 14 years of hard work and dedication from head coach Craig Ihlenfeldt, who despite having won trophies regularly with the girls had always been eluded by the National Cup.
He said afterwards: “Words can’t express how delighted I am for everyone who played today – we did it! Huge congratulations to the girls and a massive thanks to all the coaches who have contributed to not just this year but in previous years. We will all savour this experience and enjoy the celebrations.”
