Hundreds of Redbourn residents are expected to gather ahead of a public meeting into plans to double the village’s size.
Proposals by the Lawes Agricultural Trust (LAT) – a charitable trust which owns the estates at Rothamsted in Harpenden – have been unveiled for an 104-acre open arable site situated on the northeast edge of the village of Redbourn, between Dunstable Road, Harpenden Lane and the Redbourn bypass.
The development will see 42 hectares of Green Belt land reclassified as grey belt – which means it does not strongly contribute to the main purposes of the Green Belt – and would see the size of the village population increase from 2,200 to 3,200 houses.
Campaign group Save Redbourn is organising a demonstration ahead of LAT’s next public meeting at the village hall on Monday January 26 at 6pm.
A spokesperson said: “The aim is to raise awareness of the planned gross overdevelopment of Redbourn.
“Bring your family, friends, neighbours and pets – we want developers to see a strong turnout, with people filling the hall and spilling out into the car park and along the High Street.”
