A young chef from St Albans – who swapped a promising rugby career with Saracens for the kitchen – has been appointed to one of the most senior culinary positions in luxury hospitality.

Rukh Gupta was appointed to the top culinary role at the prestigious Great Scotland Yard Hotel in Westminster at the age of just 23.

In an industry in which reaching such a senior position typically takes decades, he is already responsible for one of the most demanding kitchen operations in the capital. Plus, under his leadership, the hotel’s culinary offering has evolved from a lifestyle-led food concept into a more elevated luxury dining experience, encompassing a fine dining restaurant and award-winning afternoon tea.

Rukh’s journey to the top of the London restaurant scene began in St Albans, where he first developed his skills and discovered his passion for cooking while working in local restaurants.

But as a teenager, Rukh was a promising rugby player within the Saracens development set-up and was on track to pursue a future in professional sport. Instead, he made the decision to change direction, swapping the rugby pitch for the kitchen to commit entirely to a career in hospitality, working at The Speckled Hen, and then Megan’s and Lussmanns in St Albans.

That ambition and determination saw him build his repertoire in top-tier professional kitchens, including a stint at Sketch in Mayfair and a role as head chef at Doppo in Soho, before securing the head chef position at Great Scotland Yard Hotel.

Based in the heart of Westminster, the hotel is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt. As head chef, Rukh oversees a diverse and high-pressured culinary operation. Beyond exceptional cooking, he is responsible for leading kitchen teams, developing menus, and ensuring absolute consistency across the hotel’s dining experiences, including its contemporary dining room, The Parlour.

Since taking the reins, Rukh has introduced his own culinary identity to the hotel, focusing on quality ingredients, seasonal produce, and contemporary presentation. Recent menus at The Parlour have featured dishes such as hand-dived Orkney scallops pan-fried with heritage curried carrot purée, alongside carefully sourced meat and fish dishes.

Rukh, who is now 24, said: “I never imagined that changing direction from rugby to cooking as a teenager would lead me here. I started out working in restaurants in St Albans, learning the basics and discovering just how much I loved being in a kitchen. I’ve always been ambitious and wanted to keep pushing myself, but being given the opportunity to become head chef at a luxury London hotel at 23 was something incredibly special.

“It’s been a huge responsibility, but also an amazing opportunity to learn, develop and work with talented people. I’m still young and have a lot more I want to achieve, but I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come.”
