Ten friends giving £10. Twenty colleagues giving £5. One workplace deciding to match your fundraising. However you get there, £100 can make a difference.
That’s how supporters are securing their place to take part in this year’s St Albans Sleepout – by committing to raise £100 for the charity.
The event is completely free to enter – all that’s asked is that every sleeper commits to raising at least £100 for the charity.
It might sound like a challenge at first. But £100 can be much easier to reach than you think. When hundreds of people do it together, those individual £100 targets can add up to something incredibly powerful.
Why £100? The money raised for Herts Young Homeless through the Sleepout helps them to provide advice, guidance and one-to-one support for young people facing or at risk of homelessness across Hertfordshire.
- £10 could help them answer an urgent call to our advice line, so they can be there for a young person in a housing crisis.
- £25 could pay for essential supplies like food and toiletries for a young person for a week whilst they are struggling during the cost of living crisis.
- £50 could pay for a counselling session. This helps a young person overcome obstacles they are facing and develop a strong foundation for the future.
- £100 could pay for two mediation sessions, offering support, advice and guidance for a young person and their family who are experiencing conflict at home. That can mean helping someone access practical support when they are in crisis.
That can mean helping someone access practical support when they are in crisis.
It can mean helping a young person facing homelessness understand their housing options and access the right support.
It can mean providing food, warmth and essential items.
And importantly, it can help organisations intervene earlier – supporting people before their situation reaches crisis point.
Your £100 becomes part of something much bigger.
Last year, around 100 people took part in the St Albans Sleepout and together raised an incredible £27,763.
This year, some people will raise £100. Others might raise £250, £500 or even £1,000 with the support of their friends, family, colleagues and wider community.
Every donation adds to the collective total.
Raising funds is easy! When you register for the St Albans Sleepout, the registration will automatically create your own online fundraising page so you can start sharing your challenge straight away!
And you don’t need one person to donate £100. Here are some ways you can build up your fundraising:
• Ask friends and family to sponsor you;
• Share your fundraising page at work;
• Ask your employer if they can match fund;
• Share your challenge on socials, with the help of the Herts Young Homeless social media pack;
• Share your fundraising milestones;
• Get your colleagues, family or friends to sign up and get competitive!
However you choose to do it, every pound contributes towards the same goal.
The St Albans Sleepout isn’t fundraising for one organisation alone. The event brings together Herts Young Homeless, Emmaus, Open Door, The Living Room and Centre 33, with Herts Young Homeless acting as the lead partner.
Each organisation benefits from their own sleepers’ fundraising efforts and provides different forms of support, from homelessness prevention and early intervention to practical assistance, accommodation, recovery and helping people move towards greater independence and stability.
By taking part in the Sleepout, our community can support this collective effort while raising awareness of homelessness and its causes locally.
On Friday November 13, hundreds of people will gather at Oaklands College for one memorable night. Sleeping outside for one night cannot replicate the reality of homelessness, and that’s not the aim!
It’s about choosing to give up the comfort of your bed for one night and using that challenge to raise money, raise awareness and start conversations.
So we’re asking St Albans: Could you raise £100?
