A much‑loved children’s bug hotel at a community garden in Sopwell was destroyed in a deliberate arson attack on Thursday evening, leaving residents shocked and young volunteers heartbroken.
Grow Community Sopwell, founded to bring residents together through gardening, sustainability and shared outdoor space, has been a cornerstone of the neighbourhood for six years. The bug hotel was one of its most cherished features, offering a hands‑on way for children to support local biodiversity, providing environmental learning and a feature of the wildlife section.
It is suspected that the blaze was intentionally started and was so significant that firefighters were needed to tackle the fight and prevent further damage to the rest of the garden.
The children who helped create the feature have said they are determined not to be beaten and are already planning to rebuild another habitat.
One of those young volunteers, Eleanor, said: “I can’t believe anyone would want to do this. We’re all extremely sad as it’s a huge loss for the local wildlife. Everyone has been so kind with their messages and it’s inspired us to build a bigger and better bug hotel in the future.”
County councillor Sandy Walkington, Aylett Nurseries, Fircroft Tree Services and others have already approached with offers of support to Grow Community Sopwell and the messages of support from social media posts have been flooding in.
A spokesperson for Grow Community Sopwell added: “The message from Sopwell remains one of resilience and unity in the face of senseless vandalism.”
