County highways bosses rushed into action after paving stones on the speed table in Verulam Road unexpectedly collapsed.
Initial investigations showed what appeared to be a gap below the stones, so the area was closed as a safety precaution until they could establish the size and case of the gap.
But it now looks as though the road will re-open on Friday.
A spokesperson for Herts county council said: “Our contractors dug down to find out what was going on, and found that there was a gap under the road, caused by a leaking water main. Affinity Water have now found and fixed the leak and they are refilling the hole and rebuilding the speed table, using the brickwork that was already there. We’re expecting the work to be completed, and the road reopened, on Friday.”
