St Albans MP Daisy Cooper and her Harpenden neighbour Victoria Collins have offered their thoughts on Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to resign as Prime Minister.

Daisy said: “After losing the confidence of more and more of his Ministers and MPs, Keir Starmer’s resignation was inevitable. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to see the revolving door at Downing Street is still well and truly in place.

“We all hoped that after having five Conservative Prime Ministers in just six years we would see more stability under Labour, but here we are once again.

“If – as looks very likely – Andy Burnham becomes our next Prime Minister, then he must show the ambition our country deserves. Liberal Democrats will be calling on him to secure a bold new deal with Europe to tackle the cost of living, fix our broken social care system once and for all, and give power back to people by reforming our outdated voting system.”

Victoria called for an end to the soap opera in Number 10: “Keir Starmer’s resignation reflects the frustration many people feel that the big challenges facing our country are still not being addressed.

“People across Harpenden and Berkhamsted want to see less Westminster drama and more action on the issues that matter to them, tackling the cost of living, supporting local businesses, fixing health and social care, and giving communities a stronger voice.

“Over the next six months, the government must make sure this leadership challenge doesn’t get in the way of governing. We need bold action to grow the economy, strengthen public services and restore trust in politics.

“The next Prime Minister must show they are listening. Whoever takes over must show the drive and ambition our country deserves.”
