MIX 92.6 is celebrating a night of unprecedented success at the national Community Radio Awards, bringing home an impressive four awards, including the coveted Gold Award for Entertainment Show of the Year.
The awards ceremony, held in Birmingham over the weekend, brought together representatives from community radio stations across the UK to celebrate the very best in local broadcasting.
MIX 92.6 was among the night’s big winners, collecting one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze awards in recognition of the quality, creativity and commitment of its volunteer broadcasting team.
Station manager Steve Simpson was delighted with the result: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been recognised in this way. The standard of community radio across the UK is incredibly high, so to receive four awards is a tremendous achievement and a huge boost for our volunteers.
“These awards recognise not just the quality of our programmes, but the passion and dedication of the people who give their time to make MIX 92.6 such a special part of our community.”
The Gold Award went to Christmas with the Children of Hertfordshire, a heartwarming Christmas special featuring children from schools across St Albans.
Produced by MIX 92.6 presenter Martin T Hart, the programme captured the magic of Christmas through the voices of local children, combining engaging content with outstanding production quality.
In a particularly touching moment, Martin invited his granddaughter Elva, one of the young stars of the programme, to accept the Gold Award on his behalf.
The station enjoyed further success in the same category, with its popular Saturday morning programme, MIX Brunch, receiving the Bronze Award for Entertainment Show of the Year.
Presented by Steve Simpson and Emma, MIX Brunch takes the station out into the community each Saturday, broadcasting live from events, attractions and venues across Hertfordshire.
Steve added: “Radio is, at its heart, a medium for entertainment, so to receive two awards in this category is especially satisfying.
“Every Saturday, we take our outside broadcast equipment into the community, meeting local people, celebrating local businesses and organisations, and bringing their stories to our listeners.
“It’s about making radio accessible, giving people a voice and reflecting the wonderful diversity of the communities we serve.”
MIX 92.6’s sports team also had plenty to celebrate, receiving the Silver Award for Best Sports Show for its comprehensive coverage of St Albans City Football Club.
The station provides live commentary from home and away matches, alongside a weekly build-up to kick-off and a post-match programme giving supporters the opportunity to share their views.
Sports producer Jonny Seabrook said: “We’re delighted with this award. Football is such an important part of life in St Albans, and we’re proud to bring supporters comprehensive coverage of their club, wherever the team is playing.
“From the excitement before kick-off to the final whistle and the reaction afterwards, we want our listeners to feel part of every moment.”
There was further recognition for Jonny himself, who received the Bronze Award in the Male Presenter of the Year category.
Jonny added: “We have a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers who give their time and energy every week to deliver professional, entertaining and informative sports coverage. It’s wonderful to see all that hard work recognised at a national level.”
Steve concluded: “MIX 92.6 is brought to life by more than 70 local volunteers who share a genuine connection with St Albans and the wider Hertfordshire community.
“That connection is reflected in everything we do, from our music and entertainment programmes to our local news, interviews, sports coverage and outside broadcasts.
“We’re enormously proud of what we’ve achieved together, and I hope this success encourages even more people to discover MIX 92.6 and enjoy the quality, variety and warmth of genuinely local radio.”
