We ask a different figure from the local community to choose 10 questions to answer from a list of 50. This week: Heaven is a Cupcake founder Lucy Clark.
Where do you walk when you like to think?
Nothing beats a stroll around Verulamium Park on a sunny spring day. I love the lake, the nature and all the dogs! It’s great to clear the mind.
What’s your worst habit?
I’m very conscious that I have a bad habit of wandering around the kitchen at work or around the house and putting things down then forgetting where I put them. I’m always so busy and my brain is the same so I often lose things. I have a shelf at home where my boyfriend puts all the things I leave in random places!
What TV did you watch as a child?
I’m not sure if this counts as it was more “as a teenager” but I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. It’s always my go-to comfort series when I’ve run out of things to watch. As a child I loved the ‘80s/’90s classics such as Superted, Thundercats, Poddington Peas, Fraggle Rock and Inspector Gadget.
What’s your favourite meal?
If I could eat pasta every day, I would.
Do you speak any foreign languages?
I have Austrian family and can get by in German. I’m hoping to go to Austria this year and visit some of the parts that I haven’t seen before such as Vienna and Halstatt. I mostly want to visit for all their delicious desserts and pastries!!
What was your first job? I worked at Our Price in the Maltings on a Saturday for £3.50 an hour which makes me feel very old! I met so many people there who I still consider friends today. It was a brilliant first job and I was very sad when it closed!
Where in St Albans would be your preferred choice for a sandwich? There are so many great places to eat in St Albans, it’s hard to pick one. I love George Street Canteen, it’s such a lovely location and the food is top class. Big shout out to the owners Kev and Julie for running such a lovely café.
What was your best subject at school?
My best subject was English. I’ve always loved to read and still do when I have time. Nothing makes me happier than curling up on the sofa with a good book and escaping to different places. I went on to study for a Masters in English Literature and had considered going into publishing before entering the world of cake! It did stand me in good stead though as I went on to win the University of Hertfordshire’s Flare Business Award for my start up business, Heaven is a Cupcake, 14 years later and I think it’s going OK!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I loved Indiana Jones as a kid and I wanted to be an archaeologist. I still like finding fossils on the beach but think I’ll stick to the cake decorating now!
Dogs or cats?
I love both, however I’ve always had cats and couldn’t live without them! They are so chilled whilst at the same time, being absolutely mad! I have three – Romford, Winston and Cilla.
