I’m delighted to introduce you to another local wine merchant – Paramount Wines, based in London Colney and owned and run by Gordon Clunie.
Paramount Wines are an online distributor of wines to both businesses (restaurant, bars and night clubs) and direct household customers.
I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours talking to Gordon about all things wine, the stories behind each bottle and the experiences he has had along the way, some that included royalty and French ambassador approval!
Gordon’s genuine interest in wines and a sharp eye for spotting an opportunity, taking risks and making them a success, led him to establishing Paramount Wines in 2005. What started as an interest quickly blossomed into a flourishing business, driven by a commitment to offering exclusive, high-quality wines that couldn’t be found on supermarket shelves.
The wine industry, like many others, faced unprecedented challenges during the global pandemic. But you know what? Paramount Wines didn’t let that stop them from delivering excellence.
They got all creative and found new ways to bring their wines to their customers, new and old. Virtual tastings, online platforms—you name it, they did it. They’re all about staying connected and making sure you get exceptional service no matter what.
Now, after more than 18 years, Paramount Wines proudly boasts a portfolio of exceptional wines sourced directly from family vineyards around the globe.
One of the most important parts of Gordon’s job is choosing wines to include in his collection.
He doesn’t have a favourite wine and avoids being biased towards a specific type.
This way he can approach a wine tasting with an open mind and try those where he has gaps to fill in his portfolio.
I was keen to understand more about this approach and this is what he had to say: “I don’t have a favourite winery either or a particular preference when it comes to regions or varietals.
“As crops and conditions can vary year on year, I believe it’s important to taste wines from different wineries and new suppliers in order to get a full picture of how they vary and keep up with their latest releases.”
And when asked about his USP? “I aim to buy the best wines from the best producers and then sell them at fair prices.
“There are a few of us who sample the wines before they are added to the portfolio, and we like to think between us we cover what our customers buy and lean towards.”
He explained: “While some distributors have strict criteria with which they choose their wines (they may only consider wines that have won awards or been reviewed positively by critics), we simply buy what tastes good to us at Paramount.
“That way, if one of our customers doesn’t like a particular grape varietal but another person loves it, we can offer both options without being locked into just one style or flavour profile.”
So, in summary, if Gordon and the team, taste, like it and believe it is good value for money then it will be included in the range. Amongst the many stories he shared with me I learnt that it took seven years for him to find the perfect white Rioja, but when he did, his customers were not disappointed.
Luckily for me, when I told Gordon I was interested in sampling some of his Australian wine offering, he kindly delivered this week’s recommendations to my doorstep…
First up is Xanadu 77 Chardonnay (£13.95)
This is a bright, crisp, dry and refreshing wine that truly captures the essence of its fruit-forward character.
The smell immediately caught my attention, as I was greeted by a lovely aroma of honeydew melon, pear, and citrus notes.
What struck me was that the oak presence was not overpowering; instead, it played a supporting role, enhancing the fruity aromas and adding depth.
And as for the taste, it was full zesty citrus and stone fruit flavours, which blended well with a delicate creamy sensation.
Overall, this Chardonnay is a down-to-earth gem that delivers on its promises. It offers a refreshing and fruit-driven experience without overwhelming the palate. If you enjoy wines with a clean and crisp profile, this one is definitely worth trying. It’s a well-balanced and satisfying choice that would pair beautifully with various dishes or even be enjoyed on its own.
Next up is Soldier’s Block Shiraz 2021 (£9.00)
The Soldier’s Block wines are named after an Act put in place in 1915 that rewarded the soldiers returning from war with a block of land in Australia. These blocks were often planted with vines some of which are still farmed as vineyards today.
On the nose this wine is full of raspberries, cherries and blackberries with a hint of spice. The palate is full of mixed berries, vanilla, soft spices and a hint of cherries. For a delightful combination, I paired this Shiraz with roasted lamb, but it also works well alongside a selection of hard cheeses, where the wine’s elegance and structure will shine.
So, the next time you’re looking to experience something different, remember that Gordon and the team Paramount Wines are ready to guide you through a world of exquisite flavours and unforgettable wine stories.
Their commitment to their customers extends beyond the careful choice of wines. With a dedicated delivery service, they ensure their wines reach customers across Hertfordshire and North London.
Whether you’re hosting a gathering, exploring new tastes, or seeking the perfect bottle to accompany a special occasion, Paramount Wines’ wide-ranging portfolio is just a delivery away. In fact, it’s free delivery within a 20 mile radius of St Albans.
