‘Try January’: Venturing into online wine subscriptions

Why not sample the offerings from Good Pair Wines?

This week, I’m exploring the world of online wine subscriptions, a great way to sample new and interesting wines from different regions and styles. One of the services that caught my eye is Good Pair Wines, a UK-based company that tailors your wine selection based on a simple palate quiz and your feedback.

You can choose from a variety of wines, from classic to emerging, from sparkling to dessert, from red to white.

You also get tasting notes and recipe suggestions to match your wines, as well as rewards and discounts for being a loyal customer.

Here are some of the wines that I ordered from Good Pair Wines and my impressions of them:

J.F. Arriezu ‘Crianza’ Tempranillo Blend 2016

This is a classic Rioja with a twist. It has notes of raspberry and dark berry fruits, with a touch of sweetness from ageing in American oak.

It also has hints of black olive and savoury herbs, giving it a complex and balanced character. It is a fabulous wine that is ready to drink now. This wine pairs well with summery dishes like sundried tomatoes, red peppers, ham, and charcuterie. It also goes well with pork belly, pork chops, caponata, pasta salads, chicken or pork risotto, bacon, and meaty fish like tuna or swordfish.

Klur Natur ‘Pet en l’air’ Pet Nat 2020

This is a natural sparkling wine made from 70% Riesling and 30% Muscat, two of the noble grapes of Alsace. It has a delicate nose of red apple and herbs, and a crisp and precise palate with high acidity and a long finish. It is a refreshing and lively wine that showcases the potential of natural winemaking in Alsace.

Clement Klur, the winemaker, has a long family history of wine production and follows biodynamic principles in his vineyards and winery. His wines are unfined, unfiltered, and low in sulphur. This wine pairs well with light and fresh dishes like salads, seafood, sushi, cheese, and fruit.

Frescobaldi ‘Alie’ Rosé 2021

This is a delightful rosé from Frescobaldi, a family with over 1,000 years of wine history in Tuscany and Italy. It has aromas of cherry, raspberry, and green strawberry, with a fresh and bitter palate and a smooth texture from a touch of Vermentino.

It is a delicious and sustainable wine, certified by AgriQualità and PEFC. This wine goes well with pork dishes, pasta with tomato and mascarpone sauce, carbonara, grilled chicken salads, and pecorino cheese.

Podere San Cristoforo ‘Baci’ Sangiovese 2020

This is a smooth and seductive Sangiovese from Podere San Cristoforo, a biodynamic estate run by Lorenzo Zonin, who also makes Prosecco, Petit Verdot, and Vernaccia wines. It has flavours of ripe cherry, liquorice, spice, herbs, and vanilla, with a bold and voluptuous character.

It is a versatile and easy-drinking wine that pairs with pasta, pizza, lasagna, Tuscan bean stews, chilli con carne, enchiladas, aubergine and tomato dishes, and parmesan cheese.
