English Wine Week, celebrated annually from June 21 to June 29, offers a wonderful chance to explore the vibrant world of English wines. This event invites both wine enthusiasts and newcomers to discover the diverse and high-quality wines produced in England. Throughout the week, vineyards across the country open their doors for tours, tastings, and various events. Local restaurants and wine bars also participate, featuring English wines in their menus and special pairings.
The English wine industry has seen remarkable growth in recent years. By 2024, there were over 1,000 vineyards in the UK, reflecting significant expansion. This growth is driven by increasing interest in locally sourced wines and the favourable growing conditions in regions like Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire. The total vineyard area in the UK has grown by 123 per cent over the past decade.
A highlight of English Wine Week is learning about the innovative techniques and dedication of English winemakers. By blending traditional methods with modern advancements, they create wines that are recognised globally. English sparkling wines, in particular, have received international acclaim, with sales increasing by 187 per cent since 2018.
Whether you’re an experienced wine lover or just beginning your wine journey, English Wine Week has something to offer everyone.
Recently M&S and Roebuck Estates launched a collaboration highlighting their shared commitment to excellence and innovation in the world of English sparkling wines. This partnership combines M&S’ extensive retail expertise with Roebuck Estates’ dedication to crafting premium wines.
The result is the creation of the Rockferne range, which showcases the best of English viticulture.
Dror Nativ, MW (Institute of Masters of Wine) and buyer at M&S, explained the thinking being the name.
“The name was chosen to represent the most important aspect of wine, that is of ‘the land’. The rock represents the soil the vines are planted on which is a great contributor to the quality of the wine. And British – represented by the fern which thrives in the British climate.”
Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Sussex, Roebuck Estates is a distinguished producer of English sparkling wines. Founded with a vision to create exceptional vintage sparkling wines, Roebuck Estates has quickly become a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the English wine industry.
Roebuck Estates boasts several award-winning wines, each reflecting the distinct character of the region’s terroir.
M&S Rockferne English Sparkling Brut 2020 (£28 in store at M&S or online at OCADO)
This wine offers a Champagne-like profile from 56 per cent Chardonnay, 29 per cent Pinot Noir and 15 per cent Pinot Meunier. Base wines are fermented in old Burgundian oak, then the wine undergoes traditional in-bottle secondary fermentation and ages on lees for at least 24 months. A subtle oaky, lemony nose leads to intense toasty, rich apples and a long finish. The team at M&S suggest serving it with seafood, canapés, chicken, or cheese.
M&S Rockferne English Sparkling Rosé 2019 (£30 in store at M&S or Online at OCADO)
A more Pinot dominant blend (Pinot Noir 50 per cent, Chardonnay 39 per cent, Pinot Meunier 11 per cent), this wine greets you with aromas of fresh strawberries, pink grapefruit, and a subtle hint of toasted nuts. On the palate, it offers a delightful mix of ripe red fruits, honeysuckle, and floral notes, making it an excellent companion for light dishes such as salads, sushi, and charcuterie.
Whilst the blending of both wines took place around five years ago, M&S Winemaker Sue Daniels was involved in agreeing the dosage, ensuring the finished products matched the profile she had in mind.
