One of the biggest successes in terms of celebrating our city’s rich history has been the Blue Plaques St Albans scheme.
Since 2019 a group of volunteers have been working on a long-term scheme to commemorate famous citizens who have lived and worked in the city, by placing ‘blue plaques’ on buildings or sites associated with their lives.
Now the locations of the first 14 can be found on a trail map which was officially launched last week.
Trinder Hair Studios in George Street – which features on the map as the site of ‘orchid king’ Frederick Sander’s business – hosted special guests including St Albans Mayor Cllr Jamie Day and the Dean of the Cathedral the Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore.
Blue Plaques St Albans chair, Professor Tim Boatswain (pictured ), said: “Blue Plaques St Albans has now installed 14 plaques commemorating men and women who have significantly contributed to the city. Thanks to the sponsorship of St Albans City Centre Business Improvement District we have now been able to produce a leaflet that takes you on a trail around the blue plaques sites. The launch of the leaflet has provided an opportunity to thank those volunteers who have contributed to the Blue Plaques scheme.
“We were delighted, despite this busy time, that the Mayor, Cllr Jamie Day, and the Dean of St Albans Cathedral, Jo Kelly-Moore, were able to join us. Can I also thank Marc and Sophie Trinder for allowing us to use their premises for the reception. “
