Rumours have circulated on social media about the future of the long-awaited Saints and Sinners pub – located in the former Nationwide building in St Peter’s Street – with suggestions that pub chain McMullens has pulled out of the project.
We’re pleased to set the record straight with this comment from SADC strategic director for community and place deliver (yes you heard that right) Chris Traill: “The new pub is within a Grade II* Listed Building, one of only a handful of buildings in St Albans that have such status.
“It means it has been classed as having special architectural and historic interest and every effort should be made to protect it.
“We welcome the fact that it will reopen as a pub as this will make a positive contribution to city centre life and ensure the building will be well maintained.
“Unfortunately, not all of the works carried out during the conversion have been in line with planning permission and listed building consent.
“We continue to talk to the developer about these issues in order to ensure the Listed Building is safeguarded and believe we are close to finding a solution. These negotiations have involved a significant amount of technical work which takes time.”
