Video footage has emerged which apparently shows Sammy the Saint, mascot of St Albans City FC, falling over drunk at the side’s clash with Burton Albion on Saturday.

The comedy character was escorted off the field after appearing unsteady on their feet and apparently tipsy at the FA Cup tie.

A video of the performance has been shared across various football Facebook pages since the incident took place, and even featured in the pages of The Sun.

In a statement, the club said: “St Albans City FC is aware of the video filmed at Burton Albion involving the club mascot, Sammy the Saint.

“As a community football club at the heart of the city, St Albans City FC takes this matter very seriously. An internal investigation is underway to determine how this incident occurred, and new protocols have been introduced to ensure it cannot happen again.

“The club would like to apologise to anyone who was offended by the mascot’s actions.”
