Two fire engines, four police cars and several ambulances were called to the scene of a major accident at the top of St Peter’s Street.
The incident involved a collision between two vehicles on the stretch of the road adjacent to the war memorial.
The road is currently closed between the Blacksmith’s Arms and Grange Street, with police on the ground investigating the cause.
The ambulances and fire engines have now left the scene.
A cordon remains in place before the pedestrian crossing sectioning off at least two damaged vehicles and stopping the traffic.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
A Herts police spokesperson said: “Police were called at around 2.05pm today to reports of a road traffic collision between a grey Kia Sportage and a grey and black Renault Captur on St Peter’s Street, St Albans.
“A 76-year-old man has been taken by paramedics to hospital with injuries not deemed to be life threatening.
“A 32-year-old woman has been taken to hospital by paramedics as a precaution.
“Both vehicles are currently being recovered and debris is being cleared by Highways.
“St Peter’s Street remains closed at this time while enquiries continue.”
