Renowned St Albans tailor Geoffrey Golding has another medal to pin to his chest – and this one is recognised by the Vatican itself.
The Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta – also known as the Knights Hospitaller – is a Catholic military order dating back to the Crusades.
Originally founded to care for pilgrims in Jerusalem, they later took on a military role to protect Christian interests in the Holy Land. The order is today known for its charitable work, particularly in healthcare.
Established in 1920, the Knightly Order pro Merito Melitensi is given in recognition of those activities that have conferred honour and prestige on the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and is mainly conferred on non-members.
Geoffrey, who has dressed thousands of military officers of all ranks and members of the Royal Family, also works for the Order, making them formal military attire.
He said: “It’s the comparable equivalent of a CBE within the Order, so it’s a huge honour to receive this award.”
The investiture ceremony took place at The Oratory in Brampton Road, London, when he was presented with the award by the President and Grand Prior.
He previously became the only tailor to receive The Royal Victorian Order, an honour usually reserved for high-ranking officers, diplomats, members of the Royal Family, and senior Palace servants, in 2019.
Geoffrey’s workshop was also awarded the Queen’s Royal Warrant for services to the Royal Household in 2001.
