Hundreds of people packed out St Albans city centre yesterday to remember the fallen heroes of World Wars and other conflicts.
A parade made up of representatives from the Royal British Legion, air, sea and army cadets, the Guiding and Scout movements, the police and other uniformed services made their way down St Peter’s Street to the war memorial, where they were joined by Honorary Aldermen and councillors from county, district, town and parish councils.
The Revd Mark Dearnley, vicar of St Peter’s church, led the service and Act of Remembrance, with readings by veteran John Gauthier and Corporal Tilly Kerber of 220 (St Albans) Squadron ATC.
The laying of wreaths was led by the Deputy-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Lionel Wallace DL, and St Albans Mayor Cllr Anthony Rowlands, followed by MP Daisy Cooper and representatives from various local organisations including St Albans Chamber of Commerce, Herts and Beds Yeomanry Association, the Salvation Army, and the Burma Star Association.
There was also a reading from the Hebrew Scriptures by Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet of St Albans Masorti Synagogue, an English rendition of excerpts from the Holy Quan by Akhtar Zaman DL, president of the St Albans Islamic Centre, and a passage from the Christian New Testament by Rev Michael O’Boy of SS Alban and Stephen.
Other services took place elsewhere in the district, including Harpenden, Wheathampstead and London Colney.
