A St Albans family business has picked up a national industry award less than a year after opening.
Play Putt, the nine-hole indoor crazy golf venue next to DJ’s Play Jungle, was named Best Independent Venue at the 2026 Competitive Socialising Awards, held at the Lighthouse Theatre in London.
The awards – organised by Gamechangers and hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Tayce – celebrate innovation and achievement across the UK’s rapidly growing competitive socialising and leisure sector.
The win marks an important milestone for the St Albans venue, which opened in December 2025 following an investment of more than £300,000 by local family business owners Mark and Helen Whittington.
The previously vacant unit was transformed into a retro-inspired nine-hole crazy golf course, alongside a licensed bar, karaoke room, pool and electronic darts, with food provided from neighbouring DJ’s Play Jungle.
Since opening, the business has tried to establish itself as more than simply a crazy golf venue, hosting corporate events, private parties, karaoke evenings, singles nights and charity events while developing partnerships with other local businesses.
Helen said: “We are absolutely delighted. We opened Play Putt less than a year ago, so to win a national award against established venues from many inside London, is something we are incredibly proud of.
“We’re also very proud that a St Albans independent business has been recognised nationally. The support we have had from local customers and other St Albans businesses since opening has been fantastic.”
The award judges highlighted Play Putt’s independent approach, community involvement and willingness to experiment with new events and partnerships.
Mark added: “Winning Best Independent Venue gives us confidence that what we are building is heading in the right direction. We’re still learning and developing the business, but hopefully this is just the boost we need for Play Putt.”
The recognition comes during a challenging period for independent hospitality and leisure operators, with businesses facing rising employment, property and other operating costs.
Play Putt was officially opened in December by St Albans MP Daisy Cooper, and earlier this year also welcomed Sir Ed Davey to the venue during a visit highlighting the challenges facing independent businesses.
