St Albans City Band has announced the appointment of Will Watson BMus (Hons), ARAM, LRAM as its new musical director.
The appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the much-loved local brass band, which has been part of musical life in and around St Albans for more than 130 years.
Will brings a wealth of experience to the role, combining professional performance, music education, business leadership and a lifelong connection with the brass band movement. As a trumpet player, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and went on to perform with leading UK orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
His musical development was strongly influenced by his father, James Watson, one of the most respected figures in the brass world, who held successful musical director roles with Desford Colliery Band and Black Dyke Mills Band.
Will has also built a highly respected career in the musical instrument industry. He worked with Boosey & Hawkes Musical Instruments and Conn-Selmer USA before establishing Prozone Music Ltd and later acquiring Phil Parker Ltd, two of the country’s leading brass retail businesses.
Alongside his professional work, Will has remained closely connected to brass banding, including a successful 10-year association with Amersham Band as a player, manager and committee member.
Will said: “I am honoured to be appointed musical director of St Albans City Band. The band already has a strong reputation and a positive culture. I look forward to working with everyone involved as we continue to develop the band’s musical ambitions, strengthen its role within the local community and create performances audiences enjoy and the band can be proud of.”
St Albans City Band is made up of friendly, community-focused brass bands, with opportunities for experienced players, young musicians, developing adult players and those returning to music after a break.
The band performs regularly across Hertfordshire and beyond, bringing live brass music to concerts, community events, fetes and local celebrations.

The band’s forthcoming performances include Last of the Summer Brass at Clarence Park Band Stand on Sunday July 19.
