The team behind the St Albans Postboxes charity project are celebrating after learning one of their handmade crochet creations will be appearing in a nationally broadcast UK television programme this Christmas.
The festive topper was created by local maker Candy Stuart and features a detailed, woolly depiction of a much‑loved fictional London neighbourhood, including a traditional pub, an underground station sign and a central square landmark – all crocheted entirely by hand.
Unfortunately the charity cannot mention the actual show because of BBC guidelines, but it’s pretty obvious from the photos…
The appearance marks a special moment for the St Albans Postboxes project, a community‑led initiative that brings together volunteer makers to create crocheted, knitted and textile postbox toppers which raise funds for charity while adding colour and joy to public spaces.
The team behind St Albans Postboxes, said: “Seeing one of our toppers appear on national television at Christmas is incredibly exciting. Candy’s work captures everything we love about this project – creativity, warmth, and the power of community craft to make people smile.”
St Albans Postboxes’ annual charity trails see postboxes across the city topped with unique crochet designs sponsored by local businesses. The project has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities and attracted visitors from across the UK.
The organisers have also released a souvenir book celebrating the postbox toppers and the people behind them, with all proceeds supporting the charities involved in the project. Donations can also be made directly via the project website.
