One of the highlights of the county’s ceremonial calendar took place recently at St Albans Cathedral.
The High Sheriff’s Justice Service, which was followed by the Justice Service Lunch at St Albans School, is a way of thanking all those who uphold the law and administer justice within Hertfordshire.
His Majesty’s Judges, magistrates, police, prison, probation services, and the emergency services were all represented, together with the Lord Lieutenant, the county’s politicians, charities and members of the public.
The Justice Service, held so one might pray for judges to be blessed with wisdom and good judgement in their deliberations, is held annually during the Michaelmas legal term.
Herts High Sheriff Annie Brewster said: “I would like to thank everyone who contributed to a truly magnificent Justice Service, in particular the team at the Cathedral who have a very new director of music, William Fox, previously at St Paul’s Cathedral.
“My Chaplain, Revd. Canon Richard Banham from Wheathampstead, masterfully wove my theme of ‘Sport for Good’ into his Sermon, the St Albans and Harpenden Police Cadets expertly directed everyone to where they needed to be and the new Headmaster of St Albans School, Joe Silvester, kindly hosted a delicious traditional lunch for the Judiciary.
“The Justice Service is an ideal opportunity for our community to give thanks for and offer support to everyone who administers law and order in Hertfordshire and a time to collectively reaffirm our values to defend the freedom and civil liberties that we all enjoy and commit ourselves afresh to the cause of justice for all.”
