Motorists are being warned to stay away from Elm Drive in St Albans after an unexpected sink hole opened in the street.
An engineer from Herts county council’s highways team is investigating the hole, which is approximately one metre square, to assess the extent of the damage to the road and consider remedial works.
A spokesman for HCC said: “As soon as we were made aware of the damage to the road surface an engineer was immediately sent to the area.
“We are working with partners from St Albans district council and Hertfordshire Constabulary to keep the public safe while works can be assessed and undertaken. Elm Drive remains closed to traffic and we would ask the public and drivers to avoid the area where possible.”
This is not the first sinkhole to open in the city in recent years – a massive cavity appeared in Fontmell Close back in 2015, and another at Cedar Court in 2018.
