A St Albans school’s drama department has been named a finalist in the prestigious Music & Drama Education Awards 2026.
These national awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of schools, educators, and organisations that enrich lives through music and drama.
The Marlborough Science Academy has been recognised in the category of Outstanding School Drama Department.
Head of drama Claire Griggs said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted. At Marlborough, we passionately believe that the arts are not a luxury, but an essential part of education and personal development.
“At a time when young people are navigating social media pressures and increasing mental health challenges, the creative arts offer a vital space for connection, expression and community. Most importantly, we are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of background or experience, has access to meaningful performing arts opportunities.
“Our department continues to grow and thrive. We offer a wide range of clubs, workshops and performance opportunities across drama, dance and music.
“Last year we proudly launched our school Drama Company for students eager to push their craft further. The original production, written by Mr Griggs, was performed at the Welwyn Garden City Youth Drama Festival to fabulous feedback and won first place. We were also delighted to celebrate several student nominations at the National School Theatre Awards, where Claramae Collins won the prestigious Outstanding Contribution Award for her dedication to drama at Marlborough.
“This year promises to be equally exciting. In December, our students will take to the stage in Marlborough’s first ever original musical, written and composed in house, a fresh take on A Christmas Carol, featuring a cast of around 70 students from Years 7–13. We will also support students preparing for National Youth Theatre auditions, Drama School and LAMDA exams, where we are proud to have achieved a 100 per cent distinction rate in recent years.
“This nomination reflects the passion and hard work of our staff, students and families. We could not be prouder of our community and look forward to another inspiring year ahead.”
The winners of the Music & Drama Education Awards will be announced in February 2026 at an awards ceremony in London.
