Walkers who use the boardwalk over the Sopwell Ruins wet woodland will have to find an alternative route for four weeks from Monday.
An SADC contractor will be dismantling and removing the damaged boardwalk and building a replacement in the same position.
The current wooden structure is known as ‘Fenny’s Boardwalk’ after the man who looked after the stables that used to be opposite the ruins in Cottonmill Lane. It was originally opened in March 2011 to ensure the River Ver Trail was accessible even during winter flooding.
The wet woodland is are dominated by mature alder and willow trees, which provide an excellent home for woodpeckers and bats. The
insects on which they feed take advantage of loose bark, cracks and old ivy which provide shelter and hiding places.
