The resurfacing of pothole-riddled Victoria Street railway bridge has been scheduled for the spring.
The project has been promoted by Green Party county councillor Matt Fisher, who says it is a major step forward for active travel, commuter safety, and protecting vehicles from unnecessary wear and tear.
Ahead of his election, while cycling and driving around St Albans, Cllr Fisher identified the Victoria Street bridge as the number one resurfacing priority.
Its deteriorated condition was not only unsafe but was also causing unseen damage and accelerated wear to cars, bikes, and public transport – increasing costs, reducing reliability, and discouraging active travel.
Following persistent engagement with highways officers and direct negotiations with senior leadership at HCC during the recent budget process, Cllr Fisher ensured the works were prioritised and expedited.
The works will take place overnight on Friday May 8, from 8pm to 5am, meaning residents, cyclists, buses, and motorists can expect a smooth, safe new road surface by Saturday morning, although details of any closures or diversions have not been confirmed.
Cllr Fisher said: “This resurfacing sends a clear message – we are serious about supporting active travel and motorists alike.
“Poor road surfaces don’t just inconvenience people; they quietly damage bikes, vehicles, and buses, and discourage people from choosing healthier, more sustainable ways to travel.
“Fixing this bridge was my top highways priority, and I’m proud to have secured these works. This is just the start. As a Green county councillor, I am committed to working creatively with the council and partner agencies to ensure that the complex and challenging road network across St Albans Central enables everyone – whether travelling by foot, bike, bus, or car – to move around safely, reliably, and without unnecessary delay.
“That means improving road surfaces and tackling potholes, while also strengthening cleanliness, lighting, security, enforcement, and biodiversity – creating streets that are safer, more resilient, and fit for the future.”
The resurfacing forms part of the wider Victoria Street Revitalisation Project, a scheme aimed at provide further enhancements to this key gateway into St Albans. Plans are progressing, and residents will be consulted as proposals come forward.
