Former St Albans Mayor Annie Brewster was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Hertfordshire at a graduation ceremony in St Albans Cathedral, in recognition of her service to local government, the judiciary and the voluntary sector.
The award, presented by University Chancellor Professor Grace Ononiwu CBE, recognised a long career of public and community service including being Mayor, Chairman of the County Council, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and a Justice of the Peace.
Addressing the audience, Annie described the award as the “greatest honour imaginable” and shared some of the lessons she has learned from her work. Reflecting on the fact that life rarely follows the route we originally plan, she encouraged graduates not to worry if their path changes. Instead, she urged them to have a compass to guide them, one that keeps pointing towards kindness, courage and service.
She also emphasised the importance of people and of helping others along the way. “Helping others to succeed ultimately becomes your own greatest success,” she told them, encouraging graduates to take opportunities, take risks and use their skills to lead and make a positive difference to the communities around them, leaving those communities better than they found them.
