St Albans MP Daisy Cooper has condemned Post Office bosses for ploughing ahead with proposals which will mean the city centre’s St Peter’s Crown PO branch will be replaced with a franchised service.
Responding to the announcement by the Post Office and Government ministers, Daisy said: “The St Peter’s Street branch is at the heart of our main high street and this new announcement does not come with the necessary guarantees that it will stay there for the long term.
“There are no guarantees on the range or quality of services; no guarantees that the St Peter’s Street post office will remain in the same accessible building or location; no guarantees that there won’t be a break in service; and no guarantees that if the franchises don’t work out, that we won’t lose city centre services altogether.
“From start to finish, Post Office bosses have put the cart before the horse: they’ve failed to consult on which post office and government services our local community needs before ploughing ahead with this change in model. Even now, they’ve announced they’re moving to the franchise model without setting out how they intend to consult with our community on the impact it could have.
“I will be pressing Post Office bosses to share details on the promised consultation as soon as possible, and to make sure all voices are heard before a final decision is made this autumn.”
