Makers of the St Albans edition of Monopoly initially feared that our affluent city may be “too posh” to have an Old Kent Road equivalent in its version of the world’s most popular board game. But one ancient landmark has come to the rescue!
The historic Roman Theatre has now been chosen for the square, traditionally the most affordable in the game. So why choose the ancient ruins for the lowest ranking site?
“It’s old,” explains Ella Gibbs from game makers Winning Moves UK, who are producing the special edition under license from Hasbro. “Very old ! Dating back to nearly 2,000 years. It’s also inclusive which makes it the perfect fit for Old Kent Road, which is perhaps the most democratic square on the board.
“We’re thrilled we have now filled it. So thrilled in fact that we are announcing the news!”
The new Monopoly: St Albans Edition game edition is out in October, when more than 30 St Albans landmarks will be revealed on the board.
Earlier this year Ella and her team visited the city several times and later studied each and every suggestion that poured in from a public consultation process for inclusions for the board.
“More than 3,000 nominations were cast,” she says. “We have now studied each and every one and would like to formally thank everyone who sent in nominations.”
