Volunteers at St Albans based local radio station, MIX 92.6 came together recently for their annual Radio Day celebration, recognising outstanding contributions to community broadcasting across the airwaves.
Receiving the award for New Presenter of the Year was Becky Went, who delivers the Breakfast Show on Fridays from 7am.
She said: “I am so incredibly proud to receive this award, and to be recognised as part of this amazing local radio station, MIX 92.6. Presenting a radio show is a dream come true.”
In contrast, Peter Fielding has been broadcasting for 54 years, on hospital radio, various commercial stations, and now with MIX. Accepting the prestigious award for Presenter Of The Year, Peter was very humble about the recognition: “I don’t know what to say to you, I just do what feels right, and people seem to like it. There’s no great secret to what I do… I don’t know much about phones and computers and stuff, but I tell everyone to listen to us on their smart speakers each week, whatever a smart speaker is!”
Peter’s hugely popular Sunday Mix show is on Sunday mornings from 11am, blending modern and classic hits with a run down of local events.
Show of the Year went to the sports team for their first rate commentary of Saints matches home and away every Saturday afternoon.
“Collecting the award on behalf of the team, Jonny Seabrook said: ”Not everyone is able to get to Saints matches particularly the away fixtures, so we bring all the excitement of the games to their homes through our live and uninterrupted commentary. It’s hugely enjoyable for us as die hard Saints fans, and I think that comes across in our coverage. It’s an honour to be recognised for something we feel so passionate about.”
MIX 92.6 – previously Radio Verulam – broadcasts from studios in St Albans, and manager Nick Hazel told the 50 volunteers who keep it on the air: “I am incredibly proud of what we are achieving as a community radio station. We broadcast top quality programming non-stop, focussing on what it means to be local. More and more people are listening to us not just for entertainment, but because they care about their local community environment as much as we do. That we do it entirely with volunteers continues to astonish.”
