The finalists for this year’s national Community Radio Awards have been announced, and St Albans-based station MIX 92.6 has been shortlisted five times.
For 10 years, the Community Radio Awards have promoted, championed and honoured the outstanding work of presenters and volunteers from community radio stations across the UK, recognising the impact they make in their local areas every day.
MIX 92.6 has achieved the joint-highest number of shortlist places nationwide, with five finalists representing the station at the awards ceremony in Birmingham next month.
Presenter Jonny Seabrook is a finalist in the prestigious Male Presenter of the Year category and is also a finalist in Sports Show of the Year, alongside the rest of the MIX 92.6 Saturday Afternoon Sport commentary team.
In Elections & Political Coverage of the Year, presenter Mike Dilke’s extended interview with St Albans MP Daisy Cooper has earned another place.
But it is in Entertainment Show of the Year where the station has received its strongest recognition, providing two of the category’s five national finalists: Martin T Hart’s one-off Christmas special, Christmas with the Children of Hertfordshire, and the station’s regular Saturday outside broadcast programme, MIX Brunch.
Station manager Steve Simpson said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been recognised in this way. To have finalists in categories from entertainment and sport to local interviews and community-focused programming is a real boost for the station and a testament to the quality and professionalism of the unpaid volunteers who work so hard to provide St Albans and Hertfordshire with genuinely local radio.
“We have been very ambitious with our programming this year, reaching further into a huge range of local communities than ever before , which has given us the opportunity , it would seem, to create ebven more engaging radio.”
Steve added: “We’re a genuinely local station, and to see programmes and presenters from across our output recognised alongside some of the very best community radio in the country is something everyone at MIX 92.6 can be incredibly proud of.
“We are looking forward to meeting and learning from other stations, to make MIX 92.6 an even more important community resource. And an award on the studio mantelpiece wouldn’t look too bad either!”
Rebecca Steers, chair of the Community Radio Awards, said: “Being named as a finalist is a significant achievement and reflects the dedication, creativity and passion that volunteers, presenters and teams bring to serving their communities.”
