A drama student from The Marlborough Science Academy has received a prestigious national award in recognition of her inspirational commitment to the performing arts.
Sixth former Claramae Collins was presented with the Kavanagh Award for Outstanding Contribution to School Drama at The National School Theatre Awards, which took place at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London’s West End.
This award is given to one young person each year in recognition of their engagement and contribution to drama and the arts, and Clara was selected from 104 entries nationwide.
Her drama teacher Claire Griggs said: “From the moment she joined us, Clara has immersed herself in every school production and performance offered, demonstrating remarkable growth as a performer and inspiring countless younger students who look up to her for guidance and support.
“Clara’s commitment to her craft is truly impressive and she regularly reflects on her skills and areas for development, actively seeking to enhance her vocal skills, joining the choir, and dedicating her own time to practice and improve as a singer. Her reflective nature allows her to tackle challenges head-on, making her a role model for her peers.”
Clara has taken on the joint responsibility of running the KS3 drama club alongside fellow student Luke Yon, started a street dance club at lunchtimes for younger students, and choreographed the school’s production of Grease, as well as taking on the demanding role of Rizzo.
Claire added: “Clara is a remarkable student who has made significant contributions to the performing arts at our school and into the local area. Her passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence make her an ideal candidate for this award. I look forward to seeing her continue to shine in her future endeavours.”
Claramae said: “The NSTA’s were such a fun night, it was so lovely to be able to share it with my peers and teachers. My teachers have been incredible at providing me with the opportunities in order to receive a special award, for which I’m forever grateful.”

Matilda Goldbrom (Y10) – Best supporting role in a musical for Roger in Grease;

Luke Yon (Y13) – Best actor in a play for Quies in Shadows Of The Stage;
Claramae Collins (Y13) – Best actress in a play for Katherine in Shadows Of The Stage;
Best play – Shadows Of The Stage;
Best ensemble – Shadows Of The Stage.
Claire said: “All the students have worked incredibly hard and fully deserved their nominations, we are proud of the whole cast and crew of both shows and are thrilled Claramae received the award, and hope the students’ successes continue to inspire students across the school.”
