When you think of romance you might imagine high-end restaurants, beautiful heritage buildings, cobbled streets or Champagne over candlelit tables with diamonds… so it’s not surprising then that St Albans has been revealed as one of the top romantic hotspots in Hertfordshire.
A new study has highlighted the city as one of the most magical locations to propose to a loved one.
Jewellers Galio and Jago, the team behind the study, divided the county into a grid, analysing more than 171,000 Google reviews across 186 venues.
Their research uses data from Google Map listings for parks, landmarks, and restaurants, filtering those with a minimum 4.0-star rating.
A sentiment analysis was carried out on thousands of review snippets to pinpoint which Google Map listings sounded romance-related. A shortlist of the highest rated venues were then given points based on direct mentions in reviews of words like “proposals” and “engagements”, alongside atmospheric booster words like “magical”, “stunning” and “intimate”.
They found that St Albans offers more romantic variety than almost anywhere else in Hertfordshire, with 18 unique spots identified in the study to cement its reputation.
They found that St Albans Cathedral is officially the city’s most iconic and top-ranked proposal destination, achieving a romance score of 13 to place it within the top five most romantic locations across the entire county.

From the flowers and blossoms of spring in our recently rewilded Sumpter Yard, the summer sun-bathing picnicking families on the slopes of the Orchard, or stepping inside to see our installations in colder months, we try to provide year long romanticism!
“In fact, in our Museum of the Moon installation last year one young Romeo asked if he could propose under the Moon!
“As a Christian organisation, we are saddened by the national decline in number of marriages, so it is lovely to celebrate it through an article like this. At St Albans Cathedral we are lucky that we have seen the number of weddings (and therefore proposals!) actually increase over the last few years, and this year we’re delighted to celebrate 37 at the Cathedral – and counting!

For those wanting a dinner proposal, The Ivy St Albans Brasserie was revealed as the most romantic dining destination in the city. Assistant general manager Miguel Cabezas said: “We are delighted to see St Albans recognised as one of the UK’s most romantic destinations. It is a city full of charm and character, with historic streets and beautiful green spaces, and landmarks such as St Albans Cathedral and Verulamium Park.

The Prae Wood Arms and Belvedere Restaurant were identified as the city’s top hidden gems, praised by visitors for their unique and secluded atmosphere.
Venues in St Albans achieved an average romance score of 3.5, significantly higher than the average for neighbouring towns like Stevenage or Royston, proving that the city remains a premier choice for local couples.
Head designer at Harriet Kelsall Jewellers in Chequer Street, Bethanie Green, said that St Albans is the perfect mix of historic beauty and modern living: “Most couples seem to live very busy and active lives, in St Albans they can still get that city buzz whilst still being able to go for a walk around quiet parks and cobbled streets.
“There are so many good places to eat out or go for a romantic drink so every couple can find their own slice of St Albans to enjoy and explore which really grounds their love story in this time and place.
“When couples design their rings with us together, sometimes they are already engaged, and have a placeholder or sometimes they’ve just started the conversation together and come in to see what is possible. We’ve had people propose in town on the day and head over to make it official with a ring. More frequently we have found we are designing engagement rings with both partners which doesn’t have to take away any surprise, it’s special process to experience together.
“Surprising a partner with a ring still seems to be the most popular way to propose. I think this can feel daunting but the design team in St Albans are so used to working on bespoke designs for people who are looking to surprise their partner.
