LeeAnna’s Wish, a Black-led community organisation based in the Cottonmill and Sopwell area of St Albans, has been awarded £207,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund.
This major three-year grant will enable the community group to continue and expand its vital intergenerational programmes, which include the popular Monday Club, the Community Café held on Tuesdays and Create & Craft workshops.
Founded in 2021 by Shelley Hayles, LeeAnna’s Wish has become a cornerstone for community support in St Albans. Their inclusive programme is all about bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, promoting social interaction, and helping individuals to thrive by being heard, supported, and nurtured.
LeeAnna’s Wish provides inclusive activities and regular events that promote creativity, connection, and social inclusion – especially for residents who may otherwise experience isolation or exclusion.
Shelley said: “This funding is an absolute game-changer for us. It enables us to continue and expand on our vital work with the community, creating a safe, inclusive space where residents can engage in a range of valuable activities and learn new skills. It’s testament to the importance of grassroots projects and we are deeply grateful to the National Lottery for making this possible.”
Both Monday Club and Community Café have become a weekly haven for residents seeking companionship and conversation, whilst the Create & Craft sessions offer
participants a chance to explore their creativity and build new skills. These programmes have been instrumental in combating social isolation and fostering a sense of belonging.
The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK, distributing money raised by National Lottery players to support people and enable
communities to thrive. This grant to LeeAnna’s Wish is part of the Fund’s commitment to investing in projects that bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities.
