Multiple fire engines were called to a suspected house fire in Lattimore Road, St Albans, supported by police who closed off the street while the incident was ongoing.

Four appliances arrived on the scene at around 12.15pm to tackle the incident in flats down the busy city centre road. Neighbours said a smoke alarm had been sounding shortly before they arrived.

An ambulance was also present and a man was taken away from the premises for hospital treatment.

The road has now reopened to traffic and all emergency vehicles have left.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said afterwards: “We were called to a ground floor flat in Lattimore Road, St Albans, at 12pm on Sunday 6 September following reports of smoke issuing from the property and concerns that a person was inside.

“Four appliances were sent to the scene from St Albans, Garston and Hatfield stations. Crews wearing breathing apparatus rescued one person from the flat and provided immediate care before handing them into the care of the East of England Ambulance Service.

“The fire was extinguished quickly without any further spread and has been recorded as accidental.”
