No decision has been made on the future of St Peter’s Street Post Office, despite rumours of its impending closure.
The facility, one of the organisation’s surviving Crown Post Offices, is on the list of branches at risk of being sold to a franchisee or closing permanently.
But St Albans MP Daisy Cooper, who has been fighting to save the branch, said it would be some time before we know its fate.
“I’ve pressed the Post Office for details of their process, and this is what they told me…
“The Post Office is in dialogue with the Unions until the end of March to consider options including retention and franchising.
“To gauge market appetite and explore whether franchising could be a viable option, they were inviting expressions of interest to operate Post Offices in all remaining DMB locations until early January.
“After March, they will put options on the table for consultation with the public and any affected staff.
“Until then, the Post Office assures me that they have not made any decisions about any of the Crown Post Offices.
“Meanwhile, MPs are lobbying ministers and Post Office bosses hard to protect the Crown Post Office concept – the only remaining cast iron guarantee of any level of service across the country – and I’m lobbying hard for the protection of all services here in St Albans for residents and small businesses.”
