A community interest company has been awarded £3,000 by Asda to help kickstart the eventual transformation of an unused and overgrown plot on the edge of the Sopwell Mill allotment into an Inclusive Community Allotment.
This plot is situated just 500m from Cottonmill Community Centre – the base for activities by CIC LeeAnna’s Wish.
The project site is currently overgrown and unsightly. It attracts fly tipping and antisocial behaviour and is considered unsafe and avoided by most community members. It will be transformed into an accessible and inclusive space for the whole community to enjoy.
LeeAnna’s Wish is now looking for volunteers to help with the project, in the process meeting with other community members, socialising, and forming meaningful friendships, reducing isolation and loneliness.
Shelley Hayles, founder and CEO of LeeAnna’s Wish CIC, said: “This all contributes to improved levels of activity and fitness, a healthier lifestyle, and improved physical and mental health and wellbeing.
“Raised beds will enable wheelchair users and seated gardeners to fully participate.”
