Former Herts High Sheriff and St Albans Mayor Annie Brewster has been appointed as one of four new Deputy Lieutenants for the county by The Lord Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE CStJ,
Annie, who lives in Gustard Wood, joins an esteemed group of individuals tasked with supporting the Lord-Lieutenant in his duties to represent the Crown in the county.
The Lord-Lieutenant’s office, originally established in the 1540s during the reign of King Henry VIII, has evolved significantly over the centuries. While its military origins included managing local defence and ensuring the King’s interests were upheld in the county, the role has expanded to encompass a range of duties.
Today, the role of the Lord-Lieutenant, held by Robert Voss since 2016, is one of both ceremonial and practical significance. The Lord-Lieutenant is the monarch’s official representative in Hertfordshire, responsible for maintaining the dignity of the Crown, promoting civic pride and the ideals of voluntary service, supporting local charities and organisations and fostering strong relationships between the
monarchy and the local community. He is a key figure in organizing royal visits, state occasions, presenting
national honours and liaising with local magistrates and uniformed services.
Annie expressed her enthusiasm for her new role: “I am deeply honoured to be appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. I am committed to helping promote the county’s rich heritage, while also supporting the Lord-Lieutenant in encouraging local engagement, fostering community spirit, and championing the invaluable voluntary service that makes Hertfordshire so special.”
Alongside Annie, Robert Voss has also appointed Charlie Hall QPM, former Police Chief Constable of Hertfordshire from Pirton, Quintin McKellar CBE, retired Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire from Little Berkhamsted, and Enoch Kanagaraj, CEO of One Vision charity in Watford.
