Fancy living in a converted historic pub? A section of the former Black Lion Inn on Fishpool Street is on the market for a cool £2.25m.
The property, number 198, is a Grade II listed conversion of the one-time drinking house, which dates back to the 1700s.
In 2013 it was converted into three residential dwellings, and 198 is the largest of the three houses.
The extensive refurbishment includes reinsultion throughout, a new gas-fired central heating system and rewiring, both with smart technology, new bathrooms and kitchen, the renovation of the roof and re-pointing of the brickwork.
The property includes a basement and lockable wine cellar left over from when it was a pub.
According to website stalbanshistory.org, when it closed its doors to such guests in the 1960s, the Black Lion was said to be the last common lodging house in England.
Between December 2012 and January 2013, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out archaeological monitoring and recording on the site ahead of the conversion.
They discovered two 19th century features – a soakaway and large pit – and four undated pits. Previous findings on the site include a Romano-British well, three possible medieval wells, six medieval pits and a Romano-British medieval malting oven.
