Oh… those summer EYES

EYES on Sunny...

Well, we’ve had moments hot and sunny enough to think about beaches, chilled glasses of something nice, the need to try every flavour at Darlish and (at time of writing!) that wellies aren’t going to be the ultimate summer fashion essential.

EYES on St Albans, being the thoughtful souls that we are, are also here to remind you to look after your eyes this summer.

1. Wear Sunglasses with UV Protection

UV radiation from the sun can cause serious damage to your eyes, leading to conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancer. All our sunglasses in the shop block out what they need to block out and, of course, we’ll make sure they fit you perfectly.

2. The sun has got his hat on – hip hip hip hooray. So should you.

As well as sunglasses, wearing a wide-brimmed hat can provide extra protection by blocking approximately 50% of UV radiation. Reducing the risk of UV exposure helps maintain long- term eye health. Makes sense really.

3. Stay Hydrated

Summer heat can lead to dehydration, which can affect your eyes by reducing tear production and causing dry eyes. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain the moisture balance in your eyes, keeping them comfortable and healthy.

4. Protect Your Eyes from Chlorine

Chlorine in the pool makes your eyes sting. Wearing well fitting goggles helps. If you’re swimming outside, you might like to consider those with a reflective coating as well to reduce glare. If you do get lots of chlorine in your eyes, rinsing them with fresh water can help.

5. Wash Hands Frequently

You know this. But just in case… washing your hands regularly can prevent the transfer of harmful bacteria and viruses to your eyes, reducing the risk of infections like conjunctivitis. It’s not rocket science.

6. Wear Protective Eyewear

Got some time off over the summer? Time to attempt some DIY or garden maintenance? Wear the protective eyewear. We promise it’s better than a trip to A&E and the emergency eye clinic.

7. Avoid Excessive Rubbing

Dust, pollen, and other allergens are more prevalent in the summer, leading to itchy eyes. Try not to rub them and try lubricating eye drops or cold compresses to ease the itch. If it persists, come and see us and we’ll advise what else you could try.

8. Be Mindful of Screen Time

Spending a lot of time on digital devices can cause digital eye strain, characterised by dry eyes, headaches, and blurred vision. To mitigate this, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet (that’s just over 6 metres) away. If you can get your kids to do this, let us know the secret.

9. Eat well

This (sadly) does not mean eating ice cream for the entire summer. Foods high in antioxidants, such as leafy greens, carrots, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can support eye health and protect against conditions like dry eyes and macular degeneration. Throw some fish on the barbeque and feel good about it – even if your neighbours don’t appreciate the smell.

10. Come and have an eye examination

We’re here all the summer. Just give us a call or pop in to book an examination (and no, we won’t charge you extra for some of the tests like those that advertise on the telly do). Then plan what iced treat you want from Fade to Black afterwards. If you feel something isn’t right, don’t wait – we’re here to help.
