Festival season is officially here. Which means somewhere across the country somebody is currently packing sequins, dry shampoo, emergency cereal bars and at least one outfit that seemed like a brilliant idea at 1am.
But while everyone remembers sun cream and portable chargers, there’s one thing people almost never think about before heading into a field for three days: Their eyes.
According to EYES on St Albans, festivals can be surprisingly hard work for your vision – especially when you combine heat, dust, dehydration, poor sleep and staring towards brightly lit stages for hours on end.
“People often come back from festivals with tired, irritated eyes and don’t really connect why,” says Jez Levy from EYES on St Albans. “But when you think about it, your eyes are dealing with a huge amount all weekend.”
First up: dust.
Whether it’s a dry festival field, camping areas or thousands of people dancing across dusty ground, tiny airborne particles can leave eyes feeling sore, gritty and irritated. Contact lens wearers can find this especially uncomfortable.
Then there’s dehydration.
Festival weekends are not traditionally famous for balanced hydration habits. Add sunshine, alcohol, caffeine and long days outdoors and your body starts drying out – including your eyes. That can lead to blurry vision, discomfort and tired-feeling eyes by the end of the day.
And then there’s the sheer amount of visual overload.
Fast-moving lights. Giant LED screens. Long-distance focusing towards stages. Constant switching between bright sunlight and darker tents. Your eyes are working overtime all day long.
“People forget that vision is physical effort,” says Jez. “Your eyes are constantly adjusting focus, processing movement, coping with glare and changing light levels. After a whole festival weekend, they can feel absolutely exhausted.”
Which is why sunglasses are doing much more than simply making you look cool while holding overpriced chips.
Good quality sunglasses help reduce glare, protect against UV exposure and make it easier for your eyes to relax in bright conditions. And increasingly, festival-goers are also choosing tinted lenses and colour-changing options that adapt throughout the day.
At EYES, that includes the colourful ShadeShift lens collections which have become popular with customers wanting both style and comfort during long summer days outdoors.
There are also a few surprisingly useful festival eyewear survival tips worth remembering:
- Don’t sleep in contact lenses after a long day
- Carry rewetting drops if your eyes get dry
- Keep glasses in a proper case, not loose in a tent
- Never clean lenses with the corner of a dusty hoodie
- And yes, your eyes probably do need more water
The team at EYES also recommends taking occasional “distance breaks” during long events.
“Even just looking away from screens and crowds for a few moments helps your eyes relax,” says Jez. “Your eyes were never designed for 12 hours of lasers and drum & bass.”
(rock’n’roll however…)
Still, if you are going to spend a weekend dancing in a field somewhere, you may as well do it in fabulous eyewear.
After all, festival season and bold glasses are basically made for each other.
Spex, hugs and rock’n’roll.
