Sandridge Lychgate has received a grant of £5,450 to enable the repair and conservation of the parish’s war memorials.
Work will be carried out on the wooden honour boards thanking the men of the parish who returned from the First World War, the metal plaques which commemorate those who died in both world wars as well as the repair of the brick plinth of the Lychgate and treatment of the ancient timbers and repairs to it’s roof.
Those involved in the project are St Leonard’s Church and Sandridge parish council, and donations have been received from the parish council, former councillor Annie Brewster, St Leonard’s church and local residents.
Francis Morton, director of War Memorials Trust said, “War memorials remind us of all the millions of lives ended, or impacted by conflict. Preserving them not only
ensures we continue to commemorate them but also show future generations the consequences of war and encourages them to avoid such suffering.
“War Memorials Trust was delighted to award this project a grant. The charity hopes the work will ensure its future as a focal point for commemoration.
