We ask a different figure from the local community to choose 10 questions to answer from a list of 50. This week: Alicia Nelson, bar manager at The Pioneer Club and a representative of campaign group Save St Albans Pubs.
Where do you go to listen to music?
We really are spoilt for choice with live music in St Albans but The Farmer’s Boy gets my vote. They support local bands – old and new – and have done for years. They had a costly fight a few years back when neighbours complained about the noise and fortunately they are still supporting local musicians and the venue is still going strong.
Who was your first best friend?
Carolina was my best friend in primary school in Mallorca, we met in second grade and we are still in contact to this day. We both have a son born on the same day and her daughter shares my birthday. Although we lost a few years in between we always end up finding each other again.
What’s your favourite place to have breakfast in St Albans?
George Street Canteen without a doubt. The food, the location, the view and their ethos. Perfect example of an independent business in our community.
What is your favourite single item of clothing?
Has to be my leather biker jacket. It’s a wardrobe staple and only gets better with time. More importantly, you can wear it at any age.
What is your most-missed St Albans shop, pub, café or restaurant?
I miss JK Palmers. The staff were so friendly. Amazing sandwiches and made fresh to order and always polite with a bit of banter while waiting.
Odyssey or Netflix?
The Odyssey! I go there with my kids, for kids’ birthday parties, with a film club I’m part of, with a friend or even on my own. I have cried and laughed many times there. It’s certainly one of St Albans’ top venues to shout about.
Do you have any phobias?
Spiders. I know it’s irrational, but I can’t help it. I have got better over the years and I do find them new homes when I evict them.
Do you speak any foreign languages?
Two languages. My first language was Spanish as my family moved to Mallorca when I was a baby. My brother would speak to me in English and I would respond in Spanish. It was all rather comedic walking down the road together.
What TV did you watch as a child?
TV was not on often at home when I was a child. Whenever it was, we were either watching tennis or The Simpsons. I still enjoy both!
What was your best subject at school?
English. I have always loved reading. I find it hard to put a book down once I start one. I’m a bit old school or maybe just old because I don’t enjoy reading on tablets, I need to hold a book and turn real pages. I live near Books on the Hill and I have to cross the road to avoid the temptation of going in.
