Campaigners battling to prevent the blight of a rail freight terminal south of St Albans have called on local landowners to explain their decision to support the scheme.
Lord and Lady Verulam are being challenged to explain their decision to sell their parcel of land to developers Segro.
Save St Albans: Fight the Freight held a demonstration outside the Verulam’s Gorhambury Estate on Saturday.
Lord and Lady Verulam allowed Segro to dig a trench on their land on November 15 2019 just before planning permission for the rail freight terminal was due to expire. But because the trench was dug, which developers signal as starting work on building the terminal, planning permission remains in place.
“ Lord and Lady Verulam have yet to explain why they allowed this to happen, “ said Cllr Nuala Webb, one of the leaders of Save St Albans; Fight the Freight.
“Nor have they explained why they think a huge freight terminal, which Oliver Dowden feels is ludicrous, should blight the lives of so many of their fellow St Albans citizens.
“ Saturday’s demonstration highlighted the growing anger at the Verulams. They would not want this terminal on the grounds around their house so why do they think it acceptable to inflict it next to people in Frogmore and London Colney.”
