A consultation is underway into plans to install gym facilities at flagship city centre development Jubilee Square.
The proposals are part of SADC’s efforts to utilise the commercial space at the site, which was officially completed last summer.
To date no businesses have moved into any of this space, although the council says negotiations are ongoing.
A noise assessment has to be approved prior to the implementation of the gym, and changes to opening times for certain non-residential uses, so amendments have to be made to the original planning permission.
It will also be open at all hours from Mondays to Sundays inclusive, which could impact on residents, so this also needs approval.
The application, by Lambert Smith Hampton on behalf of St Albans district council, states: “The addition of the gym use would also ensure that the ground floor commercial units can adapt to suit the needs of tenants and changing markets. This also helps to ensure that vacancy rates are reduced, which would also increase footfall, and promote an active pedestrian environment on the ground floor of the mixed use development.
“The proposed changes to support the additional gym use would, therefore, help to support the vitality and viability of the town centre as well as support good placemaking.
