An off-peak lane closure between 9am-4pm will be in place on the A414 at Park Street roundabout to allow for survey work relating to the Radlett strategic rail freight interchange.
Herts county council has approved the closure from Monday (September 29) to allow for a topological survey, which is expected to take two weeks.
All works will be preceded by an ecology inspection and require the low-level vegetation and regrowth at the roundabout to be trimmed. National Highways have advised that some of the clearance works on the A414 and North Orbital Road must be undertaken overnight between the hours of 8pm-6am and are scheduled for Friday October 10.
Changes to the Park Street roundabout agreed as part of the rail freight scheme include capacity improvements to the existing 5 arm priority roundabout, an additional A405 entry lane and A414 (east arm) exit lane, additional circulatory carriageway lane, signalisation on the A414 and A405 arm, and improvements to the A405 pedestrian crossing.
Previous work at the Park Street roundabout saw the destruction of dozens of trees as part of road modifications for the controversial strategic rail freight development, but neighbours said the trees and vegetation reduced noise, light and emissions pollution, and provided a vital environment for local wildlife.
After a number of meetings on site between Cllr Sandy Walkington, rail freight activist Andy Love and representatives of SEGRO and their contractor VolkerFitzpatrick – followed by lengthy calls to Herts highways – they managed to redraw the line of destruction. As a result of their actions, some of the signature trees and the screen of trees nearest to people’s homes will be preserved on the lower end of St Julian’s Hill.
