Bungling council contractors installed SADC’s controversial new Harpenden parking meters on land belonging to the town council – which has been outspoken in opposition to the scheme.
Two of the machines, including one on the concourse outside Boots in the High Street, were apparently placed on HTC land in error.
They were eventually removed and placed on highways land, which was where they should have been originally sited.
Town clerk Carl Cheevers said: “SADC installed some parking meters on our land without our permission. Once we flagged this to SADC they asked for retrospective permission but given the HTC view on the proposed parking charges this permission was not approved.”
Today is the first day the new on-street car parking charges will be implemented.
The charges:
- Apply from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, with no charge outside these hours;
- Allow for a 30-minutes free period once a day;
- Are £1.25 for 30 minutes, so the charge for a one-hour stay will be £1.25 while the two-hour cost will be £3.75, both including the free period;
- Cover a maximum stay of two hours with no return for two hours.
