Four years since St Albans District Fixers held their first Repair Fair at All Saints’ Church, Harpenden, they returned to the same venue to launch into their fifth year.
Busier than ever, 11 skilled amateur fixers tackled a wide range of dead and defective electrical items while three nimble-fingered seamstresses stitched their way through tired but well-loved clothing and fabrics.
In total, 27 out of 41 items were fixed, saving an estimated 300kg of CO2 emissions.
Co-founders, Philip Le Riche and Danielle Durrant-Taylor, and the rest of the team were joined for the occasion by Harpenden MP Victoria Collins.
She said: “It was wonderful to join the St Albans District Fixers and see their fantastic work in action – events like this are exactly the kind of community-led initiative we should be celebrating, proof that with the right support, repair and reuse can become second nature – and that’s good for people’s pockets, and good for the planet!”
The Fixers are planning seven or eight events across the district before the year-end and always welcome enquiries from potential volunteers, either for fixing or on the organisational side. You can find them on Facebook here.
