Harpenden Bangladeshi restaurant The 1971 has been honoured at the Global Power Awards UK 2026, receiving the prestigious title of ‘Best of Britain 2026’.
The restaurant, at 36 Station Road, was recognised for its contribution to British hospitality, Bangladeshi cuisine and the local community.
The Global Power Awards were held at London’s Meridian Grand on Monday, with businessman and politician Jonathan Peter Marland – Lord Marland – the chief guest.
They brought together entrepreneurs, business leaders, professionals and accomplished individuals from across the UK and overseas.
The evening celebrated achievement, excellence and contribution across a wide range of industries and communities.
The name The 1971 reflects the restaurant’s connection to the history and heritage of Bangladesh – being the year East Pakistan gained independence from West Pakistan to form its own independent nation.
A spokesperson for therestaurant said: “The recognition represents a proud milestone for The 1971, its management, chefs, staff and loyal customers.
“The restaurant’s story is closely connected with Bangladeshi heritage, while its presence in Harpenden reflects the wider contribution of Bangladeshi-owned restaurants to Britain’s food and hospitality sector.
“The restaurant has also received recognition from customers and the wider dining community. Its current Tripadvisor listing records a Travellers’ Choice 2026 distinction, while recent 2026 reviews have highlighted its food, hospitality and dining atmosphere.”
